Daniel Lanois was born on September 19, 1951, in Hull, Quebec. He moved to Hamilton, Ontario with his family in 1963. Lanois and his brother Bob built and operated the Grant Avenue Studio in 1974, producing records for acts like Martha and the Muffins, Parachute Club, Raffi, and Ian Tyson. His first solo album, "Acadie", was released in 1989, alongside productions for Bob Dylan's "Oh Mercy" and The Neville Bros.' "Yellow Moon".
