Frank James, the brother of notorious outlaw Jesse James, has been living a quiet life as a farmer, taking care of Clem, the son of a former gang member. However, when he learns of Jesse's death at the hands of Bob and Charlie Ford, he sets out for revenge. Accompanied by Clem, Frank tracks down the Fords, only to discover that the railroad man who commissioned the hit is hiding behind their innocence. As they try to cover their tracks, they pose as Frank James' mourners, even attracting the attention of a female reporter, Eleanor Stone. Despite her initial curiosity, she eventually learns Frank's true identity from a Pinkerton detective, but chooses not to expose him.
