In AD 120, two Carthaginian sisters, Lea and Esther, are sold as slaves to Roman tribune Marcus Valerius and given as a gift to Julia Martia, daughter of the proconsul. Julia, who is betrothed to Flavius Metellus but in love with Marcus, becomes cruel and vengeful after Marcus shows affection for Lea.
