A group of American soldiers, led by Sergeant Edward Baxter, liberate a French village from German occupation on D-Day plus two. They encounter a wounded and unarmed Wehrmacht major, who had previously saved the lives of local villagers during the German occupation. Despite initial orders to evacuate the French civilians and the German major, they are eventually allowed to return to their homes after a series of back-and-forth trips between the beach and the village. However, the group is forced to take shelter in a church basement when German artillery starts shelling the village, resulting in loss of life.
