In 1992, during the siege of Georgia's capital, an unemployed film director named Nika sees an opportunity to escape the war by accompanying a former studio bear named Chola to the Berlin Zoo, where Chola is set to retire. When Nika's films are burned in an attack that also kills Chola, he decides to disguise himself as the bear and travel to Berlin, encountering various characters along the way, including a French Canadian animal rights activist. The journey is filled with obstacles, both comedic and tragic, as the group learns that hope, love, and freedom are elusive and fragile.
