Vito's life of material indulgence is cut short when he has a fatal heart attack, and he is confronted by his mother in the afterlife. She scolds him for not seeking a transcendent life, and he is condemned to eternal death. But Vito soon discovers that this was just a dream, and he becomes obsessed with finding the truth about life and the afterlife. He seeks answers from those around him, including his wife and a priest, and reflects on his past and his relationship with his grandfather. As Vito searches for meaning, he begins to realize that his life is repeating itself, and he becomes trapped in a cycle of fear and uncertainty.
