John Rarick, the third wealthiest merchant in the world, moves his family from Kansas City to New York City in pursuit of more wealth. However, his relentless pursuit of money leads him to neglect his family, causing his wife Jenny to feel lonely and seek comfort in an affair. Their daughter Jennifer struggles to fit in with the old money social class due to their nouveau riche status, and she tries to buy her way into their circle.
