Three friends of a deceased man gather for his memorial service and take it upon themselves to find a husband for his beautiful 24-year-old daughter, despite her not wanting to get married yet. The friends' motivations are driven by their long-held attraction to the daughter's mother, who they believe has only become more beautiful with age. The daughter's desire to care for her widowed mother and her own struggle with traditional values in post-war Japan create tension and conflict among the characters.
