In Tokyo's early 1960s, a widowed naval captain, Hirayama, manages a factory and lives with his daughter Michiko, 24, and son Kazuo. His older son Koichi is married to Akiko, a controlling spendthrift, and his friends, Kawai and Professor Horie, join him for drinks.
