In colonial India, a beautiful and confident woman named Sonbai faces harassment from a ruthless subedar and his soldiers, who demand more than taxes from the villagers. When the subedar attempts to assault her, she flees to a spice factory, where she finds refuge with the aged guard, Abu Mian.
