In a secret military installation in the American desert, Captain Jean Farrell investigates an experiment called "Operation Sandman" where soldiers are injected with a drug called "the Juice" to function without sleep. Led by Gunny Riggins, the soldiers participate in Virtual Reality scenarios to improve their response times and reactions. However, after three weeks without sleep, they start experiencing hallucinations, or "freaks", which disturb their concentration. When Army Psychologist Farrell arrives to evaluate the project, she discovers a dead soldier who allegedly committed suicide with a hand grenade, but the body shows no signs of an explosion.
