Alec Fenton, an American by adoption, and his wife Marjorie, of Greek origin, live in Athens with their two children. Alec's business and relationships are driven by a need to interpret small details as significant. He becomes involved in a love affair with a colleague, Katherine, and leaves his family to return to America with her. However, he soon returns home to win back his family, but his quest is threatened by the presence of a political activist, Andreas, who becomes the target of increasingly threatening incidents.
