In the US Rust Belt, the struggling Charlestown Chiefs hockey team faces extinction as the local mill prepares to close. The team's aging player/coach, Reggie Dunlop, decides to take drastic measures to revive interest and potentially sell the team. He starts a rumor about a sale to a Florida city and introduces a more aggressive, "goon" style of play, which surprisingly works. The team attracts new fans, sells out games, and starts winning. However, not everyone is on board with this new approach, particularly college-educated player Ned Braden, who values the game's purity. As Reggie's plans unfold, Ned may find a way to achieve the team's goals while staying true to his own hockey principles.
