An 11-year-old boy named Jake has recurring visions of a Man in Black and a Gunslinger, who are locked in a struggle to determine the fate of the universe. Despite his family and doctors dismissing his visions as a result of his father's recent death, Jake discovers that his nightmares are actually glimpses of a catastrophic future. He flees from a group of sinister strangers who are hunting him and finds his way to an abandoned house that serves as a portal to a desolate world called Mid-World.
