A drifter named Clay Hewitt arrives in a small Kansas town in the 1950s and befriends the locals, including Kitty, Earl, and his girlfriend Patsy. Clay gets a job at a slaughterhouse on a ranch owned by the widow Delilah Ashford Potts, who is an alcoholic and promiscuous. He also befriends her son, Flyboy, who has just returned from a mental institution and is unable to speak. As Clay gets close to Flyboy, he helps the young man overcome his silence and starts to change his behavior. However, when Clay decides to leave the town, he reveals a dark secret to Kitty, and Flyboy's transformation unleashes a series of evil events and shocking revelations from Mrs. Potts.
