Alex, a man with no direction in life, meets a group of friends at Venice Beach Art School, including Lizzy, Patrick, and Gnome. Inspired by his new friends, Alex decides to make a movie, an "alternative political documentary in black and white" about Gnome's struggle to free Hawaii. With a budget and a crew in place, Alex is ready to start filming. However, his plans are put on hold when Gnome, who is supposed to fund the project, suddenly goes missing on the first scheduled shooting date.
