Ashoke Ganguli, a Bengali-speaking man from Calcutta, meets a fellow traveler on a train to visit his grandfather, inspiring him to travel. After a train accident, Ashoke relocates to America, settles down, and returns to India to marry Ashima, an aspiring singer. They have two children, Gogol and Sonia, and travel to India for the first time after their marriage. Years later, they return to India again when their children are teenagers, and Gogol falls in love with Maxine Ratliff, while Sonia moves to California. The family will face life-changing events and return to India again soon.
