Sooni Taraporevala is a renowned director, screenwriter, and photographer who has made a significant impact in the film industry. Her latest project is a nine-episode series for Amazon Prime, which she created, directed, showran, co-produced, and co-wrote. The series, titled "WAACK GIRLS", is set to release worldwide in 2024.
Taraporevala's directorial debut, "LITTLE ZIZOU", won several awards, including the National Award from the Indian government. Her first screenplay, "SALAAM BOMBAY!", was nominated for an Academy Award and won numerous other awards. Her second screenplay, "MISSISSIPPI MASALA", was made into a film starring Denzel Washington and won her the Osella Award for Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival.
Taraporevala has also written screenplays for "THE NAMESAKE", "SUCH A LONG JOURNEY", "MY OWN COUNTRY", and "DR. BABASAHEB AMBEDKAR", a biopic based on historical research. She has been the author of a seminal photography book, "PARSIS: A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY", and her second photography book, "HOME IN THE CITY, BOMBAY 1977-MUMBAI 2017", was published by Harper Collins in 2017.
Taraporevala has had several solo and group shows of her photographs in various museums and galleries around the world, including the Tate Modern, The Met, and the Musee de Quai Branly. Her photographs are part of collections and museums worldwide.
Awards and honors have been bestowed upon Taraporevala, including the Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian honors in the country, and an invitation to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She has been a member of the Writers Guild of America since 1988.
Taraporevala was born and schooled in Bombay, India, and received a scholarship to attend Harvard University, where she studied English Literature, Film, and Photography. She received her BA from Harvard and her MA in Cinema Studies from New York University.
