In Tokyo's early 1960s, a widowed naval captain, Hirayama, manages a factory and lives with his daughter Michiko, 24, and son Kazuo. His older son Koichi is married to Akiko, a controlling spendthrift, and his friends, Kawai and Professor Horie, join him for drinks. When a school reunion reveals Hirayama still lives with Michiko, he decides it's time to set her up with a suitor, feeling she should move on from her life with him and her brother.
