A Broadway producer, Bob Gordon, is struggling to fund his new show. He receives an offer from a young widow, Lillian, to dance in the production in exchange for financial backing. However, a rival showman, Bert Keeler, discovers the arrangement and publicly criticizes Gordon's decision. Meanwhile, Gordon's old classmate, Irene Forster, a talented tap dancer, seeks to land the lead role in the show, but Lillian is determined to play the part herself. In response, Irene, Keeler, and Gordon's secretary, Kitty, engage in a game of cat and mouse to secure Irene's position as the show's star.
