In the small town of Heward, Pennsylvania, a respected power couple, Reverend Ted Wendell and his wife Emily, are the leaders of the Heward Community Church and its associated ministry empire. However, Emily begins to notice that Ted is pulling away from her, making decisions without consulting her, including hiring a young drifter named Luke as a handyman. Emily doesn't fully trust Luke, who doesn't talk about his past, but she can't deny his charisma. Despite knowing the affair could ruin her marriage and the ministry, Emily and Luke start an affair, which changes as Luke reveals pieces of his past and Emily's own past issues resurface, affecting her psyche and faith.
