In the aftermath of the Civil War, a former Confederate cavalry captain turned Union Army sergeant, Gene Autry, is tasked with quelling Indian raids on the frontier. Alongside scout Shadrach Jones, Gene clashes with Lt. Randolph Mason, who is infatuated with Melody Colton, the daughter of rancher Jim Colton. Despite foiling an Indian attack and thwarting gun-running operations by Curt Raidler and the Apache Kid, Gene ultimately fails to prevent another raid.
