It Came from Kuchar

The careers of two underground film pioneers, George and Mike Kuchar, are explored in a candid documentary, showcasing their innovative and eccentric filmmaking achievements.

The Kuchar brothers, George and Mike, are legendary underground filmmakers who have inspired two generations of artists with their zany, low-budget films and unique spirits. Growing up in the Bronx, they began making "no-budget" films in the 1950s, copying Hollywood melodramas with their aunt's 8mm camera. Their early work deeply inspired filmmakers like John Waters, Todd Haynes, and Atom Egoyan, and they were dubbed the "8mm Mozarts" by the New York underground film scene. The documentary features clips from their early films, including "Hold Me While I'm Naked" and "Sins of the Fleshapoids," as well as interviews with inspired filmmakers and actors. It also follows George's film production class at the San Francisco Art Institute, where they create an over-the-top "monster picture."
