In the midst of the Russian Revolution, a peasant with intellectual disabilities forms an unlikely connection with a stunning countess, whose love becomes a consuming force in his life.

During the Russian Civil War, a peasant named Sergei searches for food among corpses in starving Siberia. He meets a mysterious young woman, the Countess Alexandrova, who asks him to pose as her husband. Together, they find an abandoned house, where they're joined by a stranger and Cossacks, who don't believe the woman is a peasant's wife. Sergei is beaten, but he doesn't betray her. They're eventually rescued by White cavalry and taken to the town of Novokursk, where the countess stays with the wealthy Gaidaroff family.
