June McCarthy meets Carl Cutler on a British ship traveling to New York from London during World War II. After the ship is sunk, Cutler helps June survive and they arrive in Manhattan. June asks Cutler to contact her fiancé, Jimmy Madden, about using his stranded freighter in Cutler's import business, unknowingly aiding Cutler's plans to acquire a mother ship for German submarines. Cutler charters the Apache and kidnaps June, fearing she might discover his involvement in the sinking of the Aleria.
