A convicted murderer, Dan Hardesty, is taken into custody by a police detective in Hong Kong and is escorted to San Francisco on the SS Maloa. On the ship, Dan charms Joan Ames, a socialite with a terminal illness, unaware that his true destination is San Quentin. As their time together dwindles, they agree to meet at a Mexican nightclub on New Year's Eve, knowing their chances of reuniting are slim.
