Ichi embarks on a spiritual pilgrimage to 81 temples, seeking redemption for his violent past. Along the way, he discovers a village being terrorized by a ruthless Yakuza boss and his henchmen. After killing a young assassin, Ichi is led to the village by the assassin's peculiar horse, where he meets Okichi, a young woman grieving the loss of her brother. As Ichi nurses his wounds, Okichi tends to him and develops feelings for him. However, the Yakuza boss remains determined to eliminate Ichi, and the hero must confront the gang, Okichi's affections, and the village's cowardice.
