CIA agent Harry Wargrave leads a team to extract a defecting Russian official, Gen. Marenkov, who reveals the Soviet Union's plans to develop biological weapons. Wargrave's plan is to have Marenkov travel across Europe by train, the "Atlantic Express", to lure Russian agents into making a move and uncover their identities. Along the way, they face a series of obstacles, including a terrorist attack and an avalanche, orchestrated by Russian spy-catcher Nikolai Bunin.
