In the 1970s, a boy named Billy is born with yellow skin due to a liver disease and is rejected by his dysfunctional mother. He witnesses his parents' murder and is locked in the attic for most of his childhood. As a teenager, Billy is sexually abused by his mother and has a sister named Agnes. He escapes and kills his mother and stepfather, blinding one of Agnes' eyes. Billy is deemed insane and Agnes is sent to an orphanage. Years later, Billy escapes from a sanatorium to spend Christmas with his family, who are now living in a sorority house on a university campus.
