James King, a wealthy businessman, finds himself in San Quentin after being convicted of fraud, and seeks guidance from Darnell Lewis to survive life behind bars.

Darnell, a family man, is determined to provide a better life for his loved ones by earning enough to move into a nicer neighborhood. He takes on a peculiar job, hired by James, a timid stock trader, to prepare him for life in prison. James is set to spend 10 years behind bars, but he mistakenly believes Darnell is an ex-con, not realizing it's just an assumption.
