On a medieval planet, a historian from Earth assumes the identity of noble Don Rumata of Estor, sent as a spy to contact a local resident of the Institute of Experimental History. However, upon arrival, the resident is killed in a botched palace coup, and Rumata must take his place. As he navigates the brutal medieval society, he witnesses peasant wars, palace coups, and mass executions, eventually finding it impossible to remain an indifferent observer.
