Pioneer ranching magnate Phil Evarts dies during a 1892 blizzard, leaving his Hatchet Ranch to his brother John and daughter Celia. However, the ranch's grazing land and water are coveted by many local ranchers, cattlemen, and cattle rustlers. The ranch's foreman, Will Ballard, takes on the task of protecting the ranch and its interests, especially Celia's, whom he has a special affection for. As tensions rise, the sheriff is shot, and Celia's fiancé, Sam Danfelser, betrays her, siding with the opposing group.
