In 1927 Hollywood, Monumental Pictures' biggest stars, Lina Lamont and Don Lockwood, are a glamorous on-screen couple with a seemingly perfect off-screen relationship. However, Don barely tolerates Lina, while she believes what she sees on screen to boost her own stardom and self-importance. When Monumental's head, R.F. Simpson, dismisses talking pictures, the studio's fate changes with the success of "The Jazz Singer." Don, with the help of his friend Cosmo Brown, a musician and ideas man, and chorus girl Kathy Selden, whom he secretly dates, tries to make the leap to talking picture stardom. But they face technological issues and a bigger problem: Lina, who will do anything to also make the transition, including sabotaging Kathy and others who get in her way.
