The film tells three parallel stories of the 2005 US mortgage housing crisis. Michael Burry, a hedge fund manager, predicts the bubble will burst and bets against the market. Jared Vennett, an investor, learns of Burry's plan and joins forces with Mark Baum, an idealist fed up with financial industry corruption. Charlie Geller and Jamie Shipley, minor players in a start-up company, also get involved.
