The Command background

The Command

A civilian doctor takes charge of a cavalry unit tasked with safely guiding a wagon train through treacherous Native American territory after the unit's commander is wounded.

As Captain Forsythe lies dying from battle wounds, he tasks Dr. MacClaw with leading his cavalry troop, despite the men's reservations. MacClaw, admitting his lack of battle experience, takes charge with the promise to do his best. Upon reaching a staging post, the Colonel orders them to escort a wagon train of settlers to the West, but MacClaw is torn between his duty and the demands of Martha Cutting, who is struggling to contain a smallpox outbreak among the settlers.
