In the New Mexico Territory of 1882, two drifters, Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch, take on the roles of Marshal and Deputy in the desperate town of Appaloosa. They're hired to bring order and justice after a ruthless rancher named Randall Bragg disrupts the community and kills three local lawmen. As they work to arrest and put Bragg on trial, they also find themselves entangled in a romantic web with a charming widow named Allison French.
