Ben and Leslie Cash, a family of six, live off the grid in Washington state, teaching their children to be self-sufficient and critical thinkers. Ben, a survivalist, believes in the importance of individualism and rejects Western society, while Leslie, a former attorney diagnosed with bipolar disorder, is the glue that holds the family together. When Leslie passes away, Ben's father-in-law, a Christian, accuses him of abuse and takes over the funeral arrangements, leading to a clash between the two.
