A space station owned by Energyne, a gene manipulation company, is destroyed after a laboratory rat mutates and wreaks havoc. The sole surviving crew member, Dr. Kerry Atkins, is ordered to retrieve research canisters containing a deadly pathogen. The debris from the destroyed station falls across the United States, including the Everglades and Wyoming, where animals are exposed to the pathogen.
