Sanshiro, a strong and stubborn youth, leaves his rural home to apprentice at a jujitsu school in the city. He becomes fascinated with Yano, a master of judo, and begs to be his student. As Sanshiro learns new techniques, he must also develop "satori," a sense of calm acceptance of the natural world. His goal is to balance strength and control, and in doing so, he hopes to gain respect from his teacher, win the heart of Sayo, and overcome the challenges posed by Higaki, a ruthless jujitsu master who seeks to defeat him in a deadly fight.
