Deloris Van Cartier, a Reno lounge singer, flees to the police after witnessing her married lover, a gangster, kill one of his employees. The police hide her at St. Katherine's, a Catholic convent in San Francisco, where she is renamed Sister Mary Clarence. She clashes with the Mother Superior, who is reluctant to accept her and hides her true identity. Despite this, Deloris has a positive impact on two of the sisters, and her presence brings both good and bad changes to the convent, putting her life and the convent's safety at risk.
