A 4th grader named Leonard's mother, Mrs. Helperman, is his teacher and is nominated for a teaching award. The family plans a trip to Florida, but must leave their dog, Spot, behind. Unbeknownst to Mrs. Helperman, Spot has been disguising himself as her star pupil, Scott. Spot longs to become a real boy and finds an opportunity when a mad scientist claims he can turn animals into humans. The family convinces Mrs. Helperman to take Spot to the scientist's lab, and Spot becomes a man. However, he soon discovers that being human isn't everything he dreamed it would be.
