The Crucible background

The Crucible

In the midst of the notorious Salem witch hunts, a woman's bitter grudge against her former lover's wife unleashes a catastrophic chain of events, ultimately resulting in heartbreaking outcomes.

In 1692 Salem, Massachusetts, a group of teenage girls, initially caught up in an innocent love potion ritual, are coerced into accusing others of witchcraft and Satanism. Amidst the hysteria, greedy landowners and preachers manipulate the situation to seize power and property. One woman, obsessed with a married man, seeks to eliminate his innocent wife. The play, written by Arthur Miller, draws parallels between the Salem witch trials and the McCarthyism-led Communist witch hunts of 1950s America, exploring themes of hysteria, paranoia, and the dangers of unchecked power.
