In 1946 London, novelist Maurice Bendrix reunites with his old friend Henry Miles, a government minister, and discovers his wife Sarah is having an affair. Maurice, still in love with Sarah, is dismayed by her betrayal, especially since she had vowed to remain faithful to him. Determined to uncover the truth, Maurice hires a detective agency to investigate Sarah's infidelity, leading him to confront the secrets that ended their relationship and the true nature of her marriage to Henry.
