In 1850, on the Erie Canal in New York, a cook named Molly Larkins navigates a complex relationship with her boss, Jotham Klore, while also developing feelings for a new haul-horse driver, Dan Harrow. As they navigate their emotions, they must confront their differing aspirations, with Dan wanting to farm and Molly wanting to continue working on the canal.
