Detective Jamie McDowell's overprotective nature still dominates her 19-year-old son Peter's life, much to his dismay. Despite being a builder living independently, Jamie disapproves of Peter's engagement to Kelly Shaw, whom he barely knows. As the two mothers, Jamie and Susan Shaw, confront Kelly at a diner, tensions rise. Kelly's reckless behavior in a bar, aimed at testing Peter's love, leads to a violent confrontation with her ex-fiancé, Ray Rankin. Later that night, the mothers discover Kelly's charred body in Susan's house, with evidence pointing to arson. As the investigation unfolds, Jamie is horrified to find that the prime suspect is her own son, Peter.
