In 19th century Bengal, a wealthy landowner, driven by two ambitions, seeks a worthy successor and strengthens his bond with his new second wife.

In late 19th Century Bengal, a wealthy and tyrannical Zamidar, Bhubaneswar Chowdhury, is desperate for an heir and obsessed with outdoing his rivals in the annual Durga Puja ceremony by creating the most magnificent effigy of a goddess. He concocts a plan to change the face of the goddess to Queen Victoria. Meanwhile, his two wives, Mahomaya and Jashomati, try to support each other as Jashomati is subjected to sexual assault by her husband each night.
