Anna struggles to cope with her mentally damaged brother's return from World War II, as her parents refuse to acknowledge his existence after he's institutionalized. Following his sudden death, Anna's grip on reality begins to slip, and her gangster boyfriend's reckless behavior further destabilizes her. Desperate for a solution, Anna considers a drastic measure: a lobotomy.
