Mike Smith was born and raised in the charming town of Thorburn, Nova Scotia, where his journey to stardom began at a tender age. By the time he was just four years old, he had already started playing hockey, a passion that would stay with him for many years to come. However, it was at the age of seven that Mike discovered his true calling - music. He picked up the guitar and quickly demonstrated a natural talent that would eventually set him apart from his peers.
As Mike continued to hone his musical skills, he also maintained his passion for hockey, playing the sport for most of his life. However, as he grew older, he eventually decided to focus on his music career, leaving hockey behind. This decision would prove to be a wise one, as Mike's music career was about to take off in a big way.
Mike's journey to stardom began in 1992, when he attended St. F.X. University in Antigonish, where he earned an Advanced Major in English. It was during this time that he began playing guitar and became one of the principal songwriters in the band Sandbox. The group quickly gained popularity, signing a record deal with EMI in Canada and Nettwerk in the US. Sandbox released two albums with EMI and Nettwerk, titled Bionic and A Murder In The Glee Club, and received numerous award nominations, including a Juno Award, East Coast Music Awards, and a Casby Award.
However, Sandbox's success was short-lived, and the band eventually broke up in 1998. Mike then turned his attention to location sound mixing for film and TV, a career that would provide him with a unique set of skills that would serve him well in the years to come.
It was during this time that Mike was hired to mix the original Trailer Park Boys black and white movie in 1999. While working on the film, Mike discovered his inner "Bubbles" and began doing the character on set for the crew. Director Mike Clattenburg was so impressed with Mike's portrayal of Bubbles that he decided to write the character into the upcoming Trailer Park Boys TV series. Despite having no prior acting experience, Mike accepted the offer and continued to work as the series' sound mixer until Season 3.
Since the rise of Trailer Park Boys, Mike has appeared in numerous music videos with notable artists such as Rush, The Tragically Hip, Snow, and George Canyon. He has also toured extensively across Canada, the US, Mexico, Australia, and Japan, including a memorable show at the legendary Budokan Arena in Tokyo. One of the highlights of his career was touring with rock legends Guns N' Roses, alongside his long-time friend and front man Axl Rose.
In 2010, Mike joined forces with his Trailer Park Boys co-stars Robb Wells and John Paul Tremblay to write, produce, and star in the comedy series "The Drunk And On Drugs Happy Funtime Hour." The half-hour comedy is set in the fictional town of Port Cockerton, where a kids' show goes horribly wrong when a powerful hallucinogen is accidentally given to the cast and crew.
