Alan Johnson, a former plantation owner, and his freed slave Britt, a brother he deemed, continue their story. After Britt is involved in a fight, he heads to their shared homestead, seeking revenge against the man who wronged him. However, Alan and his wife are home, and Britt's attempt to kill him results in the tragic loss of his wife's life. Alan is consumed by grief and becomes a heavy drinker, eventually disappearing from sight. Undeterred, Britt accepts a new role as a deputy marshal and sets out to find Alan and bring justice to the man responsible for his wife's murder.
