War veteran Rick Dadier takes on his first teaching job at North Manual High School, an inner-city boys school, to support himself and his pregnant wife. Despite initial assurances, Dadier soon discovers the school's reputation for discipline problems is true. He struggles to connect with his rowdy students, leading to a violent response, and must decide whether to leave for a "real" school or stay and figure out how to reach his students.
